Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Adults who want to earn a GED, but have difficulty with reading, writing, and basic math can improve these skills through ABE courses. Along with teaching basic reading and math, ABE helps to improve life and employability skills. For most, it is the beginning of renewed self-esteem - a beginning that often leads to high school diploma completion, vocational training, or job advancement. Enroll now and review basic reading, writing and math skills. Begin in ABE and then move to GED classes.

Adult Education High School Credit Diploma (HSD)
In the Adult Education High School Credit Diploma Program, a student may earn a High School Diploma by attending credit-based evening classes. Students study English, Social Studies, Math and Science. Nevertheless, credit may be awarded for work or military experience, independent study projects and self-paced curriculum packets. Transfer credits are accepted from traditional high school programs.

Building Bridges: Transitioning Adult Education to College
In collaboration with Northwest CT Community College, Foothills Adult & Continuing Education will offer a transition-to-college program for adult education students. External Diploma, General Education Development (GED) and High School Diploma students will be chosen and offered online, hybrid, and on-site classes for college and high school diploma credit. Inquire about the variety of opportunities available for you as a registered student in the Foothills Adult & Continuing Education Program.

Civics Education
Civics Education provides students with an opportunity to develop skills in communication, decision-making and life-long learning. Students gain a better understanding of U.S. government and civics.

Citizenship
To become an American citizen is a dream of many who come to this country. Citizenship classes offered through Foothills Adult & Continuing Education teach American History and government. In addition, these classes prepare students to complete the Application for Naturalization, coach them to be successful in the Immigration and Naturalization Services interview, and prepare them for civic preparation.

English As a Second Language (ESL)
Connecticut has a diverse population that includes immigrants from around the world. Foothills Adult & Continuing Education courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) teach limited-English speakers to read, write, speak and understand English. ESL programs target non-English speaking immigrants who need better English skills to become active members of the community and to prepare for employment or job advancement, or who want to take an active role in their children's education. ESL courses use role-playing and conversational settings to ease the task of learning the language.

External Diploma Program (EDP)
The External Diploma Program provides another diploma option. Adults who have gained skills through life experiences and have demonstrated competence in a particular job, talent, or academic area can complete independent course work toward a diploma. EDP is geared toward the individual who, despite leaving school, has a high degree of skill in reading, writing, math and critical thinking. This is not an instructional program but a series of evaluations - on the senior high level - leading to a Torrington Adult Education High School diploma. The program's self-paced curriculum, and emphasis on at-home learning make it easier for some adults to fit education into their lives.

General Education Development (GED)
This program helps to prepare students earn a Connecticut State High School Diploma by passing the GED examination. The GED consists of a five-part exam in Math, Literature, Social Studies, Science and Writing. The GED program instructs students in test-taking and problem-solving skills, allowing students to practice with the GED format in preparation for the exam. To take the GED exam, students 17 or 18 must show proof that they have been formally withdrawn from school for 6 months or that their 9th grade class has graduated.

Are you currently enrolled in a free adult education class at Foothills Adult & Continuing Education? You may be qualified to participate in the Pathways to Career Success Program. Explore various career options and learn the employability skills you need to be successful in the workplace. Attend classes at our new Career Development Learning Center opening Thursday, January 27th at EDUCATION CONNECTION in Litchfield.
Special focus on occupations in: Food Services, Computer Technology and Healthcare.

Foothills Adult Education Program provides free state mandated courses structured to meet the requirements of the school districts and the needs of the students.They provide avenues to successfully complete State of Connecticut requirements for high school completion.
Follow 1 of 3 options for High School Completion: External Diploma Program (EDP), High School Diploma Program (HSD, and General Education Development (GED). Not ready for GED, take Adult Basic Education (ABE).
